DAY AND CAMPKIN.
John Campkin was christened on the 18th August 1816, and married Sally Day, the daughter of William Day, a market porter, at Woolwich on the 28th November 1941.
John had become a gardener, at the time of the 1861 Census, they were living at West Heath House at ERITH.
The house was the home of the Renshaw Family, and had been built between1799 and 1806. John and Sally had their first child in 1843, and named his John.
ERITH Parish Church was undergoing repairs, due to a fire, which caused some parish records to be destroyed.
During the period of the repairs, services were held in an adjacent field.
On the 21st February 1877, this temporary church was destroyed by fire, and many of the earlier records were also destroyed. Fortunately the Vicar, T.W. Hardy in 1880, copied the records from the damaged registers, but many dates and other information was lost.
The last child of John and Sally was Frederick Charles, born the 11th December 1867, when the family was living at Victoria Terrace, Lessness Heath, ERITH
Sally died in 1896, and John a year later, both were buried in the local cemetery.
(I would imagine the church they are referring to, is St Johns, West St).
MILLS, NIGHTINGALE AND MORRISSEY.
Frank Mills lived in Maximfield Rd ERITH, after his marriage in 1891. Previously he had lodged with his future father-in-law, William Nightingale at 30 West Street ERITH.
Frank was an iron moulder, and William an iron furnessman, and probably were employed at either Messrs Easton, Anderson & Goolden Ltd, Callenders, Vickers or Maxim Nordfelt. Relatives of this family still live in the ERITH & Dartford area.
Received from Joan,, about her time in ERITH AND NORTHEND.
I was born in 1917, at Colyers Lane ERITH, and I had a sister 7 years older. At the time of my birth, father worked for Vickers Armstrong ERITH.
I went to the Convent of Sacred Hearts at Bexley Rd , although my sister had stayed until she was 14 years of age, I went after 2-3 years to Northend School aged about 8 and stayed until around 11 years old.
After 11 you went to another school, and some of my friends parents had decided like mine, to send us to Uplands at Bexleyheath. This was thought to be the best transfer, even though a new school had just been built at Crayford.
I have vague recollections that my parents thought Bexleyheath was easier to reach, by getting on a tram to the Clock Tower (Bexleyheath).
I did have a few friends who did go to Crayford.
I stayed at Uplands until I was 14, when at that time you could leave school. I went to work at Vickers Armstrong at Crayford. The ERITH factory had been closed by then, and my father had transferred.
I remained there until 1934 when my father died suddenly, I was 17 and my sister had been married 6 months.
My mother decided she and I would return to the Midlands where all her family lived, but my married sister stayed, going to live at Horsa Rd, Northumberland Heath.
I had to leave all my friends, but my mother and I would travel back often to visit my sister and her husband, and sometimes we would stay for a week.
I kept in touch with two friends, and although one later died, I continued writing to the other, and now keep in touch with her daughter at Christmas.
I did go back to ERITH after I married, staying with my sister for a time, before moving to Bexley Road, ERITH. I was there for part of the Blitz, because I was able to see my husband more often. We came back to where I live now in 1947, and I lost my husband in 1963.
I remember Colyers Lane and Northend School. The Headmaster was a Mr Turner and he wasnt very nice, and always carried a cane with him. There was a Mrs Todman, Mrs Stanley, and a Miss Powell. There was also a male teacher, but cant recall his name. What a difference Uplands was to Northend. I recall the family names of Pearsill, Porters, Everards ,Coulsons, Hayes and Hitchcock.
There was a big field opposite where we lived, and the house where I was born, was built by Vickers, so were the others around us.
I have a soft spot for Erith, even though I have lived here longer than at ERITH.

CASELTON/CASTLETON OR CASSELTON CONNECTIONS WITH PROPERTY AND FAMILY DUE TO MARRIAGE. (See story of Caselton, which is to be continued).
Culmer George Caselton living at Holly House in 1901 and 1907. (Colyers Lane).
Percival Powers married Katie Miles. (Holly Hse, Colyers Lane).
Culmers Caseltons wife Rosa, was formerly also Rosa Mile, and could just be a mistake by the recorder, for Miles.
Looking for details on RUBY POWERS, whos family lived at Holly House, after the Caseltons/Castletons sold the property in Colyers Lane, we wonder if there could be a connection between these two families, other than one moving out and the other moving in. Culmer lost his wife Rosa with consumption in 1905, and later moved to Surrey, but nothing is known whether Culmer ever married again.
With help of a family member in Wales, we will continue with the family in Auckland, NZ. I have to give a very special Thank You to John Stuart Young in Australia, for his help.
Information that could help in the research of these two families, would be appreciated.
Also of interest to a local researcher, the Power Family, especially RUBY.
Frank Whiting and Ruby Power were sweethearts, but Frank died in the flu outbreak of 1919. Ruby however appears connected to the Caselton or Castleton in two ways. Her mother we believe was a Miles, the same as Culmer Caselton wife Rosa.
Ruby and her family followed the Caseltons into Holly House.
Groombridge in NZ.
Stephen Charles Agate, emigrated to New Zealand in 1872, with his wife and family.
Stephen had a sister Harriet, and received from a Harriet Groombridge, two letters. One written in 1875, from her address ERITH Rd, (near the Prince Albert) Bexley Heath, and the other ERITH ROAD, near the Horse and Groom, also Bexley Heath Kent.
The family in NZ, would love to make contact with anyone from the Agate Family and descendants of Harriet Groombridge.
David, Harriets husband , went hop drying at Shoreham, and it appears the family had come from Shoreham to Bexleyheath. David and Harriet had a daughter named Ann, but no other children are mentioned in the letters. Harriet was born in Cowden Kent in 1827, and her parents were George and Sophia Agate.
Higgs and Hudson of Erith, Kent
David Higgs married Sarah Hudson in ERITH in 1836
.
Descendants of this family could still be living in the ERITH area, or elsewhere in Kent.
Any information appreciated by Maureen, see Surname list

Although some of the family later moved to West Ham London, other went to Dale Road in Dartford, with some remaining in the Erith area, and Colyers Lane.
Pauline the genealogist researching the Family Tree, now lives with her family in the NW of England, would love to find any information that allows her to find her great-grandmothers Birth Certificate.
Since no record has yet been found of the actual birth of Emma, is could be that she was born in Belvedere, and not Erith and connected to a local Gypsy Family, so any information would be appreciated. The local brickfields in the area could hold the clue to employment in the Erith area of William and the males in the family, and why they came to the area.
For genealogists everywhere .
Grampas Tree.
They think I should cook and clean and be the model wife
I tell them its more interesting to study GRANDPAS life.
They simply do not understand why I hate to go to bed
Id rather do 200 hundred year of research work instead
Why waste this time I have on earth just snoring and asleep?
When we can learn of ancestors, that sailed upon the deep.
We have priests, rabbis, lawman and soldiers, more than just a few.
And yes theres many scoundrels, and a bootlegger or two.
How can a person find this life and awful drudge and bore?
When we can live the lives of those folks, who came before.
A hundred years from now of course, no one will ever know
Whether I did laundry, but theyll see my Tree and Glow ..
Cause their dear granny left for them for all posterity,
not clean hankies and the like, but a finished Family Tree.
My home may be untidy, cause Ive got better things to do .
Im checking all the records to provide us with a clue.
Old grannys pulling roots and branches out with glee,
Her clothes aint hanging out to dry,
Shes hung up on the tree.

Bits & Pieces - August 2003.
Genealogists, cross the fine line between Family History and Genealogy. GENES or ENVIRONMENT. Kent Message Boards mention a child & mother from ERITH separated at birth. Although not adopted, I was mixed with another child born at Dartford Hospital a week earlier & also from Arthur St. My mum was frantic until she was believed. I had an auntie who raised two children from her husbands family after the war. Both boys had been sent to Devon for safety during WW2, instead, were badly treated.
My partner of 15 yrs was adopted when his mother died in NZ. He was 6 months old, and his middle-aged father felt unable to care for him. Birth mother, born Whitechapel Hospital, London 1917. Grandmother Chevening, Kent 1879. His mother emigrated to NZ in 1952, leaving her family in SE12. Recently divorced, she came to the other side of the world with a 9 yr old daughter and no prospects. His adoptive parents were from Yorkshire UK.
LEGACY OF AN ADOPTED CHILD.
Once there was two women who never knew each other
One you do not remember, the other you call MOTHER
Two different lives, shaped to make yours one
One became your guiding star, the other became your sun
The first gave you life and the second taught you to live it
The first gave you the need for love
The second was there to give it
One gave you Nationality the other gave you a name
One gave you the seed of talent, the other gave you an aim
One gave you emotion , the other calmed your fears
One saw your first sweet smile, the other dried your tears
One gave you up, it was all that she could do
The other prayed for a child, and God led her straight to you
And now you ask me through your tears
The age old question through the years
Heredity or environment-
Which are you the product of?
Neither my darling,-
Neither,.. just two different kinds of love.

These pages were never meant to be a ‘general site for genies’, who look back into GENEALOGY & FAMILY HISTORY. Kent & London have many genie related sites, and usually, we return to our favourites. Websites are overlooked as we surf, so I hope to focus on those by-passed, yet associated with the area of ERITH and belong to its history archives.
Family Trees and memories, sent to me from past and present local families from the area, form the ‘Social History’ of ERITH.
I hope researchers who find they have ERITH connections can look in on the museum when visiting, find a friendly face and a person willing to help with local knowledge, or point to the best place for research.
Now, I also include links that will give insight, to those families who have once called ERITH home. Whether they lived, visited, worked, played, travelled or raised family a there, they were all important. Some were born or married, nothing else, and we all know of someone who died there.
Special thanks to Bernie Johnson & Family of Erith, for his early support. Also, Alan Boakes (Erith Museum), for his patience.

My Nan, Alice Ann Scudder was born in 1887 at 1 Temperance Cottages, Arthur St (Northend).
On the 2nd August 1908, she married Granddad Webb who had been born at Stone, Nr Dartford.
At the time of the wedding, granddad was living at 10 Wiggen Cottages and Nan was living at number 8 ( Wiggen Cottages), Arthur St.
Witnesses at the wedding were Arthur Bolden, William Scudder and Alice Stokes.
Nan’s sister Eliza Scudder married William Medlar.
At the time of the 1901 Census, my Great grandparents were living at 8 Wiggen Cottages. A family called Maxim lived at no.5, Cottendens at no 6 & 7, and the Graves Family at No9.
Also at the time of the 1901 Census, my Nan’s brother Joseph Scudder, his wife and son were also living with the family in the 2 up 2 down at Arthur St, Wiggen Cottages.
In 1871, my great grandparents had been living at Bayley Cottages, Royal Hill ERITH, but then moved to different areas around London.

***Knowing the size of the cottages, I understand how difficult it would have been to raise such a large family under one roof.
At the time of the 1881 Census, houses were still being built in Arthur St & Northend. Every terrace had a name and set of numbers, not numbers that continued throughout the street. I have often found that houses built in Victorian times, did have a name rather than number. Searching for a street or road address, when it was a house with a name and recorded incorrectly, has been a hard lesson.***
Does anyone know how the Arthur St Cottages got their TERRACE names. Perhaps, from local business - WIGGENS & TEAPE?
Could the cottages have been built for new employees? We are interested in opinions or any information.
Arthur St, is outside the boundary of ERITH, on the Crayford border, and can be confusing for researchers. Also Colyers Lane, between Northumberland Heath and Northend.
We used ERITH, as the address preceded with Northend. For those researching Arthur St, and Northend, the Parish Church was St Paulinus. St Augustine’s, Slade Green was built in 1899. I know those with local knowledge understand the boundary lines, but not researchers who are strangers to ERITH.
Christchurch & St Johns are both ERITH Parish, but ERITH had several other churches.
A cousin from Barnehurst, Maureen married David from Belvedere at Christchurch in the 1960’s, but I cannot recall any family marriages at St Johns, West St in my lifetime.

My aunt Ivy (neeThomas), lived next to the family home in Arthur St when she married Edward Curley,(known as Ted or Noddle), who died at ERITH Cottage Hospital in the 1950’s & buried at St Paulinus Cemetery, Crayford. Daisy, another sister married Leonard Curley, who always rode a bicycle back and forth to work. I believe the Curley family came from Manor Rd.
Another Curley family lived next door to aunt Ivy & uncle Ted. May and either Bill or Jim Curley, also related to uncle Ted and uncle Len.
Aunt Ivy later married Wilfred Martin of 18 Crayford Rd, ERITH, a widower with one adult son.
If anyone would like to make contact with the MARTIN FAMILY, please contact me. I will pass it on to the Martin Family, who no longer live in ERITH. Wilfred Martin and 1st wife Isabella Rose (1906-1954) had one son, who married a WELLS. 2nd wife was Ivy Curley, (nee Thomas).
For those researchering MARTIN in the ERITH, you will find several families. Wilfred’s Grandfather was Stephen, wife Eliza both born around 1849. Their last child shown on the 1881, is Charles J Martin*, Wilfred’s Father. There were several children born to the family after the 1881 census. Elizabeth, Edward, Annie, Kitty, Dora, William and we believe Frederick. Uncle Wilf often told me he had a sister called Kitty. .
Wilfred and Ivy married at Queen Street Baptist Church, early 1960’s.The wedding reception was held at my cousin’s home in Slade Green Rd. Once married, they lived at Wilfred home in Crayford Rd, and took great pride in the gardens and the cottage with the pale blue front door. Wilfred, was a very active outdoor person who liked a bet .
When the houses were being demolished, they moved to STREAMWAY, close to Brook St Cemetery. I last saw them in 1977, when they had a golden Labrador, and still active gardeners. I’d returned briefly to Erith, arriving just before aunts Daisy and Martha died.

JEFFERY/JEFFREY, Davis, Durrant, Nott & Colesill.
alanjeffery@paddocks.freeserve.co.ukI was introduced to your pages on the Erith Museum site by Terry Fletcher, and thought I would make contact, as I have recently started my family tree, but pretty quickly hit a brickwall on my father’s line.
I was born in Erith, (some 55 years ago) as was my father Walter, and his father Edmund.
From the 1901 Census, my g/grandfather Alfred was born in Lewisham about 1863 and had moved to ERITH.
The family was living at 25 EBENEZER Terrace, Gilbert Rd, Belvedere, just along from the station with his wife Florence Annie, (Nee Davis aged 34 years old) and children James aged 9, Lily aged 3 and Charlotte aged 1. Alfred Jeffery was described as a General Labourer. Wife Florence was born in Brixton and I have found in the 1881 Census a Davis Family living at the ERITH Marshes, which I suspect are the right one, although as yet I have not obtained a marriage certificate.
My grandfather Edmond Jeffery was born on the 3rd July 1903, at Maida Rd, Belvedere, which is just the other side of the railway line at Belvedere Station. At the time of his marriage to Eva Kathleen Elizabeth Durrant, he was living at 53 Manor Rd ERITH, where he remained until his death in 1962, and where my grandmother continued to live until her death in 1981.
At the time of their marriage, Edmond was a cattle hand, but this changed to a Thames Lighterman, I suspect the Durrant Family influence.
My grandmother Eva’s father Walter Frederick Durrant was employed on the Thames, and I have a copy of his apprentice indentures dated 1904. He was apprenticed to a Frederick Watts, who I suspect was his uncle, as we have a Watts Family connection.
My father Walter Edmond Frank Jeffrey was born the 26th September 1927, at 4 Claytonville Cottages, Belvedere and was also a Lighterman, apprenticed to his father Walter Frederick Durrant. He married Elsie Maud Nott, who had been born in ERITH, 21st August1928. Both my parents died at the family home in Colyers Lane in the mid 1990s.
The Durrant Family seem to have a strong connection with the Wilder family. A number of inter marriages took place in the late 1800’s.
Many of the Wilders were employed in the brick works, which I understand were located at the end of Manor Rd where my grandparents lived. I would love to hear from anyone who can add anything to the names I mentioned. Numbering over the years must have changed in Colyers Lane.
(
No 239, where my parents lived was about 200 yards from the bottom. Right hand side as you travelled down the hill. Not sure when they were built, but I imagine shortly before WW2, or just after, and there was a group of 6 or 8. If I remember correctly, the old terrace houses started opposite them, and continued down to Northend Rd).My parents had moved to Colyers Lane from Frinsted Rd in the 1950’s.
My first school was Normandy County Primary, which I believe was built on either orchard or farmland, backing onto Colyers Lane.
However the connections with Colyers Lane go back even further.
My g/g/grandfather John Thomas Durrant was born there, 8th August 1861. I have a copy of his birth certificate, but no number for Colyers Lane is shown. His father was Joseph Durrant a brick moulder, and mother Elizabeth Coseall. I have established with Terry Fletcher that the correct spelling for the surname is Colesill.
John Thomas Durrant married Alice Wilder, who father William was also a brick maker. I mention this, as this is where my Watts connection comes in.
Alice’s mother was Emma Beadle, and the marriage to William produced 6 children. William died in 1867, and Emma remarried John William Watts and had a further 7 children.
The family can be found on the 1881 Census at 51 High Street, ERITH.
One of the children, Frederick Watts, may have been the Frederick Watts, apprenticed by g/grandfather Walter Frederick Durrant.
On the 1881 Census a Wilder Family was living at Arthur St.
I know there was a large Wilder Family from Southend, where they were a number of brickfields, but as yet, do not know if they are the same family.
My grandmother Eva Kathleen Elizabeth Durrant, born 3rd July 1908,
Boundary Street, which is of course next to Arthur St.

***You will note that Alan’s Family are related to Terry’s. Another family connection is with the surname Whitehead.***

I believe William Maybury died at Stratford Hospital in the 1950’s. He’d been a P.O.W.WW2., and son of a Jewish Family, raised in the East End of London. Active in the British Legion at ERITH, from memory held meetings above the WHITE HART.
I recall we collected trays and tins from there, for annual poppy selling. William married Martha Jane Thomas, (born Belvedere) eldest of the Thomas Family and lived at 63 Arthur St, Northend, ERITH next to the family home at 65. Known as Bill and May Maybury, their 2 children were Dorothy (died of MS), and William known as Billie who died in India after the 2nd WW aged 20 years. This family are in later pages of

JOB ALBERT MARTIN.
paddipaws@aol.comReceived from a Martin Family researcher.
I was browsing through the ERITH MUSEUM site today and found the list of local names being researched. You had a Martin on your list.
My mum’s family were situated on the static site in Belvedere off Picardy Rd. The travelling fairground was owned for generations, but closed down in the WW. My grandparents still lived on the ground until 1966, when on the death of my Granddad, Job Albert Martin, the land reverted to the council.
It is now part of the large Crabtree Manorway Flyover. Boundary Rd, Northend, was a winter site for the fairground people (showman). Not in anyway associated with Gypsies or Travellers. I was born in ERITH at Hainault Maternity Home, and lived in ERITH until 10 years ago.
My father’s family are local to ERITH and Slade Green and quite well known. Their name is SEARS.

St Augustine, Slade Green was built 1899, and the vicarage 1920.
Plantation House, was near the church, any idea where? I believe it belonged to a family who built furniture.
The house on the corner of Slade Gardens was built about the same time as the vicarage, and is believed it was built for a doctor?
Does anyone have any information. The house name was painted on the glass over the front door. Any help appreciated. fawrdane@paradise.net.nz
